Join FDRD volunteer and CSU Professor, Eric Erslev for an interpretive bike tour. This bike tour of the northwestern corner of Green Mountain Reservoir will visit the bowels of a 30 million year old volcano and a large, active landslide. We will park at the northern junction of Heeney Road with Rte 9 and start biking in a counter-clockwise direction around Green Mountain Reservoir. At the northern tip of the reservoir, we will examine the excellent exposures of the inner workings of a volcano that was part of the blanket of volcanism forming the Flat Tops to the north and the San Juan Mountains to the south. We will pause at the Green Mountain Reservoir Dam to discuss the local network of reservoirs that help provide water for 40 million people along the Colorado River.

At the town of Heeney, we will see evidence of active landsliding and discuss how reservoir water levels are used to control the rates of sliding. From there, participants can choose to return to their cars or extend the trip along the western side of the reservoir by biking on Heeney Road until they choose to turn around.

You are responsible for your own or a rented bicycle – be sure they are mechanically 100%. Safe bicycling practices will be used to keep everyone healthy and happy. We strongly recommend that you wear protective, weather-appropriate clothing and sunscreen/lip balm. A helmet must be worn while riding.

FDRD will not be offering a shuttle for bikes, so please plan ahead in regards to trip logistics. Some options include, arranging a pick up before or after the tour, or biking back to your car if you're feeling up for the extra adventure!

June 17th will be our backup date in case of bad weather!
